Antigua Barbuda Geography

Antigua is 108 square miles, Barbuda is 32 miles north - is 62 square miles and the uninhabitable rock of Redonda 20 miles to the north west is half a square mile. There are 72,000 people in Antigua, 1, 500 in Barbuda and only seagulls on Redonda. From Antigua you can see Guadeloupe, Montserrat, Nevis and Saint Kitts.

Antigua Climate

Temperatures range from an average of low of 73% F (23% C) in winter to about 85% F ( 30%C) in the summer. The trade winds blow fairly constantly except in September. The average rainfall is only about 45 inches so there is care not to waste water. The rainy season is September, October and November but there are usually only short showers.

Antigua Clothing

Antigua retains a semblance of formality and swimsuits are limited to beaches. There are nude beaches at Hawksbill and Dieppe Bay ( Dieppe Bay requires 4 wheel drive ) These beaches are not visited frequently by locals. Casual clothes

Antigua Language

Although English is the only language ever adopted in the island, you may wonder what Antiguans are saying when they chat in their lilting accents to each other. Everybody sooner or later acquires a few idiomatic phrases such as " Antigua me come from" " It bang good"

Antigua Electricity

Antigua has a definite current quirk. Most hotels operate on 110 volts, 60 cycles ( the same as in the US and Canada) However, some have 220 volts and some homes even have a bit of both...Check before plugging in appliances. Hotels often have transformers but rarely hairdryers. We let our hair dry in the sun!

Antigua - Calculating Cost

Since there is such diversity of hotels it is best to check with Antigua Hotels & Tourist Association, Newgate Street, St. John's Antigua, telephone ( 268) 462- 0374/ 3703/ 4928 if you wish to budget exactly. There is a 10% service charge ( which saves the bother of tipping for everything ) and a 7% government tax. Rates are cheaper throughout Antigua outside the " season" from December to April 16th. Many hotels offer special packages for golfers, tennis players, gamblers, honeymooners ask your travel agent.

Antigua Currency-

Eastern Caribbean $100.00 bill

The unit of currency is Eastern Caribbean dollars ( EC$ ), issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank ( ECCB) and pegged to the US at an official rate of EC $ 2.70 to the US $1.00. The ECCB quotes daily rates for the Canadian$ and the pound sterling as well for other international currencies.
